Vietnamese King Orange / King Mandarin Orange is a type of Vietnamese king orange traditionally referred to as Citrus nobilis in Vietnamese commercial and traditional classification, belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is widely cultivated in the southeastern region of Vietnam. The fruit typically has green to yellow-green skin with a characteristic rough texture, juicy segments, a naturally sweet and mildly acidic flavor, and a distinctive citrus aroma. It is primarily used for fresh consumption and juice production.
Distinctive Characteristics
The fruit is round or slightly flattened, medium-sized, with relatively thick skin and the characteristic rough surface of Vietnamese king orange.
The skin is usually dark green, yellow-green, or turns yellow as the fruit matures, depending on the harvesting stage. The peel should be intact, without cracks, deep bruising, or signs of decay.
The flesh consists of multiple juicy segments, ranging from yellow-orange to deep orange. The segments may contain seeds depending on the variety and cultivation conditions.
Fruit harvested at the appropriate maturity has a natural citrus aroma and firm skin, without excessive softness or juice leakage. The inside should show no signs of dried segments, mold, or fermentation.
High-quality fruit should be fresh, firm, and intact, without bruising, decay, mold, or abnormal odors. The flesh should not be dry, discolored, or show signs of deterioration.
Flavor & Texture
The segments are juicy and soft, with a characteristic fibrous texture. The flavor combines a refreshing acidity with natural sweetness and the distinctive aroma of Vietnamese king orange. Good-quality fruit should not have a bitter taste, excessive sourness, or abnormal fermented odor.
Uses & Applications
Consumed fresh after peeling or separating the segments.
Used to produce fresh orange juice for beverages or as an ingredient in fruit-based preparations.
Can be used as an ingredient in fruit salads, desserts, and ready-to-eat fruit portions.
Nutritionally, Vietnamese King Orange provides water, vitamin C, folate, potassium, and naturally occurring antioxidant compounds. Nutritional value may vary depending on the variety and maturity of the fruit.
