Xoan Orange is generally classified within the Citrus sinensis group and belongs to the Rutaceae family. It is a specialty orange commonly cultivated in the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam. The fruit is small to medium in size, with relatively thin green to yellow-green skin when mature, juicy flesh, a mildly sweet flavor, and a delicate characteristic citrus aroma.
Characteristic Features
The fruit is round, slightly flattened, or somewhat oval, generally small to medium in size and relatively light compared with larger orange varieties.
The skin is relatively thin with a slightly rough surface, ranging from green to yellow-green. Depending on growing conditions and harvest stage, the skin may become more yellowish as the fruit matures.
The flesh consists of multiple small juicy segments, ranging from pale yellow-orange to orange. Seeds may be present depending on the source and growing conditions.
Properly mature fruit should have relatively firm skin without excessive softness, cracks, or juice leakage. The flesh should remain juicy and free from dryness or signs of fermentation.
Acceptable raw material should be fresh, firm, and intact, free from bruising, decay, mold, or abnormal odors. The flesh should not be excessively dry, abnormally discolored, or deteriorated.
Flavor & Texture
The segments are soft and juicy with a slight fibrous texture. The flavor is mildly sweet with low to slight acidity depending on ripeness, accompanied by a delicate citrus aroma. Good-quality fruit should not have excessive bitterness, sharp acidity, or abnormal fermented odors.
Uses and Applications
It can be consumed fresh after peeling and separating the segments.
It can be pressed into fresh orange juice for beverages or used in fruit-based preparations.
It can also be used in fruit salads, desserts, and ready-to-eat fruit portions.
Nutritionally, oranges provide water, vitamin C, folate, potassium, and various antioxidant plant compounds; their nutritional composition varies according to variety and ripeness.
