Sweet Mandarin – Mekong Delta is generally classified within the genus Citrus spp., belonging to the citrus family (Rutaceae). It is commonly cultivated in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam. The fruit is small to medium in size, with a relatively thin greenish-yellow to yellow-orange peel when ripe, juicy flesh, a mildly sweet and slightly acidic flavor, and a characteristic citrus aroma.
Characteristic Features
The fruit is round to slightly flattened, small to medium in size, and generally relatively light in weight.
The peel is relatively thin, with a slightly textured surface, ranging from green to greenish-yellow and turning yellow-orange as the fruit ripens depending on growing conditions and harvest maturity.
The flesh consists of small, juicy segments ranging from yellow-orange to light orange. The segments separate easily and may contain seeds depending on the variety and growing conditions.
Fruit at suitable maturity should have a relatively firm peel, without softness, cracking or juice leakage. The flesh should remain juicy without dried segments or signs of fermentation.
Acceptable raw material should be fresh, firm and intact, without bruising, decay, mold or abnormal odors. The flesh should not be dried out, discolored or show signs of spoilage.
Flavor & Texture
The segments are soft and juicy with a slight fibrous texture. The flavor is mildly sweet, with low to moderate acidity depending on maturity, accompanied by a delicate characteristic citrus aroma. Good-quality fruit should not have a bitter taste, excessive acidity or abnormal fermented odor.
