**Key Characteristics**
Young mushrooms appear as round or egg-shaped buds, encased in a basal sheath known as a volva.
As they mature, the cap expands, ranging in color from pale gray to grayish-brown depending on the stage of development.
The flesh is white, tender, and relatively firm; the stalk is short, with a characteristic volva at the base.
They are typically harvested at the young bud stage, when the texture is firm and the flavor is distinct.
Fresh mushrooms are firm to the touch with a naturally dry surface, free from sliminess or bruising.
